“Months after a deadly outbreak, a disparate crew of five fights for survival aboard a
powerboat off the coast of Vancouver Island. As resources run low and supplies break down, tensions
come to a head when a sudden engine failure necessitates their first journey back to shore. Spanning
the past and present, Sea Drift centers the persistence of hope, art, and fought-for community amid
dire environmental and personal circumstance. To save each other, the characters of Sea Drift must
first overcome themselves.” - Casey Flemming (Author of Sea Drift)

Brand New Theatre's Production of Casey Flemming’s Sea Drift marks an exciting return to
producing a full-length play as part of our season, emphasizing our organizational mission of
championing new stories written by and for our diverse student community. Accordingly, Sea Drift is
a timely, post-apocalyptic, coming of age narrative that fervently centers the perseverance of hope, art, and fought-for community under devastating circumstances.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and recent election, the outbreak prompting the
story of Sea Drift speaks directly to the isolation, fear, and turmoil of our times, providing a relevant
theatrical reflection on the nature of disaster response and ensuing fallout. Sea Drift strives to take consciously-created, realistic context into a narrative contending that hope is the only constant. Its intergenerational characters, confined to a small powerboat and amid dire conditions, grow to find meaning in each other. Featuring a cast of eight–including a 3-person surrealist chorus (“Death,”
“Duty,” and “Devotion”), who build out the world past the boat–the script centers strong, found familial connection across all walks of life, relating to audiences beyond students alone.
We believe, as student artists, that we have an immense responsibility as storytellers not just to observe and tell stories about the world, but to challenge it to change–and as such, Sea Drift represents how BNT strives to be a part of that change. As we continue to create art in a changing and
challenging world sometimes out of our control–through pandemics and political unrest–Sea Drift
argues that we must remain hopeful, and that people will grow to choose each other, time and time
again.

With Sea Drift, we continue on.
